The wildly popular golf sitcom, Da Game, recently taped a variety of scenes at Wailea Old Blue Golf Club, with news anchor and show host Dave Ward’s sidekick, Maisie Ramage, leading the charge.

“Wailea Old Blue is one story golfers here in the islands, and those who are just learning about golf in Hawaii, can stand to hear more about,” John Byrne, the show’s creator explains. “So, we plan to do a series of short clips about Old Blue so we can cut away from other isle topics and return,” he said.

“We wanted to provide our guests with the state-of-the-art in terms of quality on all our tee boxes,” course general manager Barry Helle said. “So we brought in the very best, and the results are impressive, even by Wailea standards,” Helle notes.

When you see them, you’ll immediately notice the difference! Now, all of the Blue’s tees are lush and beautiful, thanks to the new Seashore Paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum) turfgrass that they used for the Old Blue. Paspalum is a very salt tolerant warm-season grass with what industry professionals dub as: ‘desirable characteristics’. It is greener, and thrives on brackish water, which is the most environmentally conscious way to keep a golf course green today.

“The ordinary golfer may never notice the changes, as they have come to expect the best from us,” Helle says. “We continually strive to ensure that their experience meets those expectations, and this update is just another example of those efforts,” Helle added.

Wailea Old Blue Golf Course has long been the standard by which all other resort golf courses are measured. Designed by Arthur Jack Snyder in 1971, the Blue Course was lauded by the national media when it debuted, and has been continuously ranked among the best in the nation for decades. Site is many professional TOUR events over the years, the Blue Course continues to be the venue of choice for golfers in search of a haven for scenic views, wide fairways, and inviting greens.

“As we’re in the tropics,” Barry Helle, the Wailea Old Blue course general manager, points out… “So, flora can take over, even in spite of the outstanding work of our greens crew, headed by Steve Olson,” Helle said. “Over the years, our lakes and waterways change with time, so in keeping pace by doing this work, we consider this to be part of the process of keeping our course at the top of its ‘game.’”
